To me
Dear Members,
It has been a wonderful year for our style and we are quickly approaching the 50 year anniversary of Cuong Nhu in 2015. As we are entering the next 50 year cycle, I must commend the styles' dynamics that are now slightly different then from its inception. TEENAGE SENSEIS!!!!!!
Cuong Nhu has evolved since 1971 from a college campus in Gainesville to dojos all over the country, and 3 overseas (2-Germany, Venezuela). It has also become more of a young people style, the 5-17 year olds.
I want to personally give a "chao" (salute) to all Cuong Nhu members from this age group. These young members have incredible spirit and resiliency as they enter our program. They generally take twice as long to get to the same rank as the adults. Their body goes through changes each year as they are growing, which makes it much more difficult to master the movements. They also have to do all the tough throws and spar against larger adults during the tests.
On another note, we also redefined some basic principles and terminology to unify the Cuong Nhu styles and their relationships to each other. Eighty- five senseis attended the event in Jacksonville in November of this year. Many regional events all across the country took place throughout the year. They were well run and the testing atmospheres were very high in spirit and conducted in a positive manner.
The Training Camp in Raleigh was attended by 425 members. In total 14 new black belts were promoted this year in all regions. Marianna Kaufman is definitely our most wisdom filled new black belt at 70 years young. From Shodan and up there were 20 new Dan ranks, and Master Allyson Appen is our newest 7th Dan. Congratulations to all! Cuong Nhu's depth and width for all ranks with senior leaderships are equally distributed across all regions.
Jessica and I visited and taught at the "Pyramid" dojo in Tallahassee, Florida. It is a facility for mentally and physically handicapped adults. It had a profound effect on our spirit and we were thankful to be a small part of their journey. Very special kudos goes to the head of their school, sensei Danny Pietrodangelo. Also, we can add one new dojo to our dojo list. Sensei Manfred started a new school in Munich, Germany.
Lets all continue to focus on improving our spirit. Keep training hard and help each other to inspire one another. Compete from within while training, and never stop having fun teaching and learning. I believe in "progression is perfection" so lets try to be perfect each and everyday. However, the deepest root of our belief system is still in the code of ethics #1 "serve others". This extra credit goes out to all the senseis that have to serve both functions as teachers and students. You all exemplify the living arts of our style.
I am very excited to know that the next 50 years will be significantly better than the last simply because we are passing on our roots and knowledge to a more dynamic species than us, CHILDREN. I have witnessed this first hand while traveling all over the country and overseas. As the saying goes "if your child is better than you, the family will excel; if he/she is worse, it will extinct".
Any sensei can teach an extraordinary student. Only a true leader can teach and inspire an ordinary person to do extraordinary things. Self respect is important but respecting each other is essential. I do hope and wish everyone a great holiday and good health going into the New Year. Thank you all for living my dream.
Whatever It Takes,
Quynh Ngo
